I recently watched both "The Quiet Tourist" (2002 movie starring Michael Caine) which gives one a sense of what the 1950's in Vietnam must have been like, and "Indochine" (1992 movie starring Catherine Deneuve) set in 1930's Vietnam when resistance to French rule was already happening.

Then I saw "Outside the Law" (2010) which focuses on an Algerian family caught up in their country's struggle for independence from France. One of the sons returns from fighting in Indochina as a member of the French Army and finds that his family has moved into a shantytown in Paris.

All three of these films give one a glimpse of the fading out of colonial power in the Third World in the mid-twentieth century.

I love Paris in the rain during "canicule" times.
The film, a poem to Paris from Woody Allen, sounds interesting. I will not miss it. Thanks for sharing your romantic take on it.

Jo- It's February, and I finally sat down with the basket of Christmas cards and read all your news and gazed at all your photos over and over. Then I ordered That Paris Year. I already know I will love this book. You may remember that I was a French major and loved living my life in French while in Switzerland in the 1970's. I spent several weeks in Paris in the summer of 1967, and my photos show us all in dresses...not in jeans with backpacks. At least we were beginning to wear what they called "mini-faldas" once we got to Spain. Can't wait to read this beautiful book, and then introduce my Amherst Book Club to your writing. Congratulations and love from Mary

Hi Mom, it's great to see the new digs--they're all so pretty (as is Doug in front of it). It's funny to think of you climbing in and out of the window as the entry point, though! I bet the salon was a great place to feel local culture to the fullest.

Thanks, Joan. KInd words, but I'm just calling 'em like I see 'em, and writing on the fly. Connecting to Internet has become more iffy, and then there's the problem of finding time between studying/activities and traveling. Now we're on the Caribbean coast, like Jamaica mon, and will post more when possible. Ciao (as they sahttp://jobiggar.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?p=192&approved=1#y here)
